If you live outside Michigan and are injured here, do not assume that riding in a Michigan-insured vehicle gives you the same benefits as a Michigan resident. Residence, vehicle registration, insurance, and the applicable statutory rules require individual review.

Identify the facts before choosing an insurer

Provide your actual living arrangements, vehicle ownership and registration, policies, and reason for being in Michigan. A mailing address, temporary visit, or student status does not by itself resolve every residency question.

MCL 500.3113 includes an important restriction for nonresidents unless the specified Michigan registration and insurance condition is met. The policy and statutory analysis should be completed before promising PIP coverage.

Records to bring

  • Auto declarations, endorsements, and coverage in effect on the accident date.
  • Vehicle registration and ownership records.
  • Information about residence, household relationships, and any student or temporary living arrangement.
  • Crash and medical records, along with written coverage decisions.
  • Health-insurance or other benefit information relevant to payment and possible reimbursement.

PIP eligibility is not the entire injury claim

A restriction on PIP benefits does not automatically decide whether another party is legally responsible for injury-related damages. A liability claim and other available coverage require their own review. Do not assume either that every loss is covered or that no legal route remains.

Health plans, Medicare, Medicaid, or other payers can raise reimbursement questions depending on the actual payments and law. Those questions affect a potential net recovery but should not be described as automatically eliminating it.

Students and visitors should obtain prompt advice

Preserve evidence and reporting dates while the coverage review proceeds. Do not wait for insurers in different states to resolve responsibility without checking deadlines.
